The 'debate' has been around for a while, as some of you may remember; when the pre-natal sex selection kits first came out (a few years ago), TOI ran ads for it. When people protested, there was a 'rational', 'individual rights-based' carefully crafted editorial that defended the decision to place the ad and to allow sex-selection. Funny how people don't talk about the individual rights of a woman to live a life free of assault, abuse and apathy in quite the same way, huh?

A perfect world would obviously not need 'policing' of any kind. But we know it ain't perfect - far from - and this it-may-be-broke-but-don't-fix-it-it'll-happen-automatically attitude is dangerous. Like the US government on climate change. And yes, we do need to be careful about blurring the lines between collective social justice and individual liberty and choice, but with great rights, come (er, sorry we reminded you) great responsibilities.

Disturbing, isn't it? Atanu Dey (a rather popular blogger) also wrote about this earlier: http://www.deeshaa.org/2003/10/22/the-skewed-sex-ratio/ with a similar attitude but a more sophisticated tone.
